The WIFI: QR Format
Every WiFi QR code, on any generator, encodes the same plain-text format defined by the QR standard: WIFI:T:security;S:network_name;P:password;H:hidden;; This generator builds that string for you from the form fields above, then encodes it. A phone camera or QR scanner app recognizes the WIFI: prefix and offers to connect instead of opening a browser.
What each field means
T- security type: WPA, WPA2, WPA3, WEP, or nopassS- the network name (SSID), case-sensitiveP- the password, omitted entirely for open networksH- set totrueonly for hidden networks
A note on special characters
The WIFI: format treats a semicolon, comma, or backslash inside the SSID or password as a separator unless it is escaped with a backslash. This generator does not add that escaping for you, so if your network name or password contains one of those characters, test the generated code carefully before printing or relying on it.
Longer network names and passwords produce a denser QR code with more modules, the same way any other QR content does. A few real examples, encoded at error correction level M:
| Example network | Encoded length | QR version | Modules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open network, short name | 34 characters | 3 | 29 x 29 |
| WPA/WPA2, short SSID and password | 36 characters | 3 | 29 x 29 |
| WPA/WPA2, typical home network name and password | 59 characters | 4 | 33 x 33 |
| WPA3, hidden network, long passphrase | 65 characters | 5 | 37 x 37 |

Security Types Explained
This generator supports six security modes. Pick the one that matches your router's actual setting - a mismatch will produce a QR code that fails to connect even though it scans fine.
| Option | Use it when |
|---|---|
| WPA/WPA2 (recommended) | Your router is set to WPA2 or a WPA/WPA2 mixed mode - the most common home and business setting. |
| WPA3 | Your router advertises WPA3-only, the newest and strongest standard. |
| WPA/WPA2/WPA3 (mixed mode) | Your router runs transition mode, accepting both older and newer devices at once. |
| WEP (legacy) | An older router that only offers WEP. WEP is weak encryption; upgrade the router if you can. |
| None (open network) | No password at all, such as a public café network. |
| RAW (custom config) | You already have a hand-built WIFI: string and want to paste it directly instead of using the form fields. |
Where to Display a WiFi QR Code
The best placement depends on the setting. A few proven spots:
- Cafe or coffee shop: on the counter near the register, on table tents, or on a wall-mounted sign.
- Hotel room: on the desk card or in the welcome packet so guests connect at check-in.
- Office lobby: at reception or in conference rooms for visitors and clients.
- Airbnb or vacation rental: on the fridge or the house rules sheet.
- Restaurant: on the menu or a table tent. See the restaurant QR code guide.
- Waiting room: a doctor's office, salon, or repair shop - anywhere people wait and want internet access.
On the scanning side, iPhone Camera (iOS 11+) and Android Camera or the WiFi settings scanner (Android 10+) both recognize the code automatically and prompt to join - no extra app needed on either platform. Older devices may need a third-party QR scanner app instead.
